The answer to this question is simple. It is your mechanic’s job to inform you of any problems or potential problems that he or she finds with your vehicle, much the same way your doctor informs you of any potential problems when you go in for a physical. If you go in for your regular checkup, you expect your doctor to inform you of any potential problems he may come across. It is best to think of your mechanic as the doctor for your vehicle.
Think of your oil change as the check up for your vehicle. You know that the oil needs to be changed every 3,000 miles to insure that it is in top operating condition, as well as make sure that any small issues now don’t become bigger problems later on.
Oil changes are the most basic form of maintenance for your vehicle. Most vehicles require an oil change every 3,000 miles, (or at 5,000 miles if using a premium filter and full synthetic oil). Then there are tune ups, regular 60,000 mile, 100,000 mile, and other recommended maintenance intervals that should be performed. During any of these “checkups” your mechanic should report any and all problems or potential problems that he notices with your vehicle. He would not be doing his job properly if he does not report on issues. He should also remind you of any upcoming maintenance, such as timing belt, tune up, fluid flushes, and the like.
Your mechanic wants to insure that your vehicle runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible. When your mechanic notices that parts are becoming worn or are not functioning as new, he should always inform you of any potential problems, as well as informing you of the reasoning for recommending and repairing said problems.
It is almost always less expensive to repair problems when they are first reported or noticed as opposed to repairing them later on. When parts begin to wear in your vehicle, if they are not repaired in a timely fashion, it is very likely that the extra strain on other parts of the vehicle will wear out prematurely.
So the next time that your mechanic tells you that he found “something” wrong with your vehicle, please remember he is just doing his job in making sure that your vehicle stays in its best possible running condition.
